From Hertfordshire just north of London, Watford are nicknamed The Hornets, The Golden Boys, The Yellow Army or The 'Orns. Founded in 1881 as Watford Rovers, it morphed into Watford Football Club in 1898. The club has come close to winning major silverware on several occasions but it has never quite managed to claim anything. Its best performance was a second-place finish in the top tier in the season of 1982/83. They have also been runners-up in the FA Cup twice.
In recent times Watford have not been shy to change their managers. The current manager is Xisco Muñoz but you have to go back to 2008 to find the last time a manager was in charge for more than 100 games - that distinction belongs to Aidy Boothroyd, who left in November 2008. Other top managers include Graham Taylor who had two stints in charge, Ken Furphy, Ron Burgess, Neil McBain and Harry Kent.
A host of big-name players have worn the famous yellow kit including recently departed hero Troy Deeney and John Barnes. Luther Blissett boasts the most appearances for The Hornets while Cliff Holton, with 42 goals to his name, holds the record for the most goals in a single season. Other legends include Tony Coton, Wilf Rostron, Nigel Gibbs, Ross Jenkins and Gary Porter.
Watford have a long-standing association with singer Elton John. The star whose real name is Reginald Dwight was a former chairman and benefactor of the club.
