Tottenham transfers: £27m deal collapses, but second source confirms superior signing is happening
Tottenham have pulled the plug on signing Arnaut Danjuma outright, though a second trusted source has confirmed Daniel Levy will soon land a superior player.
Danjuma, 26, looked on course to join Everton back in the January window. A deal was forged, a medical passed, and the player even performed early media duties for the club.
However, Tottenham swooped in with a last-ditch loan proposal and the chance to play for a team further up the table clearly appealed to Danjuma.
The Dutchman joined on a six-month loan that also contained an option to buy worth £27m.
Despite Tottenham’s insistence they hijack Everton’s deal, Danjuma proceeded to barely feature for the club in the second half of the season.
He racked up just 12 appearances for Spurs, with the vast bulk of those coming off the bench.
Now, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has revealed Spurs have pulled the plug on signing Danjuma outright.
The journalist tweeted Tottenham “will not trigger” the £27m option, with Danjuma now due to return to parent club Villarreal.
However, he’s unlikely to remain with Villarreal for long, with Romano adding “he’s expected to leave the club again”.
While not naming names, Romano concluded the winger has already received offers to join sides in the Premier League, Bundesliga and Ligue 1.
Danjuma snubbed, but Kulusevski will sign
While Tottenham have turned their back on one winger, another is poised to join on a permanent deal.
Dejan Kulusevski is the player in question, with the option to buy in the Swede’s 18-month loan from Juventus about to be triggered.
The Evening Standard reported Spurs will activate the option they claim is worth €30m (approx. £26m).
Now, the Athletic have echoed those claims, with their headline reading: “Tottenham to exercise option to make Dejan Kulusevski move permanent.”
The 23-year-old’s loan deal contained both an obligation and option to buy depending on how Spurs’ 2022/23 campaign fared.
The obligation would have triggered had Spurs qualified for the Champions League and Kulusevski made 20 EPL appearances.
Kulusevski made 30 league appearances this season, though Tottenham missed out on UCL qualification by finishing a disappointing eighth.
However, a back-up option to buy was inserted into the deal and Spurs fully intend to take it up. Per the Athletic, it’s worth a ‘slightly lower fee’ than the £31m the obligation would’ve been worth.
Once the option is activated, Kulusevski will move onto the contract he pre-agreed when initially joining on loan from Juventus 18 months ago. In other words, personal terms are already set in stone.
