Tottenham transfer collapses to give Postecoglou immediate headache; four expected exits could now become five
Ange Postecoglou will be saddled with an unwanted player after a transfer that would’ve net the club over £17m collapsed.
Postecoglou became the first Australian to manage in the Premier League when appointed by Tottenham on Tuesday morning.
The 57-year-old will waste no time before getting to grips with the club’s summer transfer window. Indeed, a report from the Telegraph brought news of an imminent defensive clear-out.
Clement Lenglet could see the option to buy in his loan from Barcelona ignored, per the report. Elsewhere, Spurs will listen to offers for Eric Dier, Davinson Sanchez and Ben Davies.
Football Insider claimed £15m will be enough to swing a deal for Davies. Transfer valuations for Dier and Sanchez are yet to emerge.
New additions are clearly required if so many defenders are to make way. One player certain to be back in north London this summer is Joe Rodon who’s seen a permanent move to French outfit Rennes fall through.
The Wales international, 25, was sent on a season-long loan to Rennes last August. Rodon began brightly in France, though made just two appearances in Rennes’ last 15 Ligue 1 encounters. He was an unused substitute in 11 of those matches.
Former Spurs boss Antonio Conte saw no place for Rodon in his side despite operating with a back five last season. Whether Postecoglou feels the same remains to be seen, but a permanent move to Rennes is now off.
Speaking to Quest-France (via GFFN), Rennes sporting director, Florian Maurice, confirmed the €20m option to buy will not be taken up. €20m currently equates to £17.22m.
“As for Joe [Rodon], there is a very high purchase option,” said Maurice. “Evidently, it won’t be possible for us to raise that amount.”
Rodon will therefore return to Tottenham where he may well be added to the defensive exits pile.
Tottenham have already begun exploring moves for new defenders, with Roma’s Roger Ibanez in their sights, per La Gazzetta Dello Sport and Sport Mediaset.
However, an even more eye-catching addition could come in the form of Man Utd’s Harry Maguire…
