Newcastle swoop for Tottenham misfit as former club drop out of race

Ryan Sessegnon TEAMtalk

Tottenham starlet Ryan Sessegnon is at the top of Newcastle’s list of summer transfer targets, according to a report.

Sessegnon was one of the most coveted prospects in English football when Spurs signed him from Fulham last year. However, he has had to be patient in his first season at Tottenham.

The left-sided player has made only four Premier League starts in his Spurs career so far. Hence, the London club may have to loan him out so that his development does not stagnate.

Indeed, last week there were reports of a potential return to Fulham, after they regained promotion to the Premier League.

Despite this, Cottagers vice-chairman and director of football Tony Khan says he is “not interested” in taking the 20-year-old back just to develop him for someone else.

“I am not interested,” the Evening Standard quote him as saying. “Ryan already played for us in the Premier League and he didn’t do enough to keep us in there.

“I can’t be in the business of developing other people’s players. I expect the squad to look very similar to the one that got promoted. We won’t spend £100million again.”

That does not mean that Sessegnon’s future will definitely be with Tottenham, though. According to The Sun, Steve Bruce wants to take him to Newcastle.

The Magpies have already taken one left-back on loan from Spurs in 2020, having signed Danny Rose on loan in January. However, they now want to add Sessegnon.

SESSEGNON PART OF PLAN TO BUY BRITISH

The tabloid claims that Newcastle want to buy British this summer. With a transfer budget of just £30m – far less than would have been available had their takeover gone through – Bruce is planning to make some shrewd moves for homegrown talents.

Sessegnon is his top target, as he is confident of being able to sign him on loan. That would save funds for permanent deals for other players.

Bruce is also considering bids for Norwich defender Ben Godfrey and Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson. Both players have just suffered relegation to the Championship.

Another target who was at Bournemouth last year is Harry Wilson. Newcastle are also in the running for the winger, who Liverpool have made available for £20m.
