Mourinho offered encouragement after enticing call with top striker target

Callum Wilson Bournemouth

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho has held a personal phone call with Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson, according to a report.

Spurs are looking for a striker this summer having failed to bring in a centre-forward recruit in January. Mourinho reportedly wants cover for Harry Kane, having seen his options up top decimated by injuries this season.

Previous reports have claimed England international Wilson is on Tottenham’s radar as a cheap option after the Cherries’ relegation.

According to Football Insider, the 28-year-old is now Mourinho’s top target. What’s more, the Portuguese coach has taken significant steps towards striking a deal.

Mourinho and Wilson have reportedly spoken on the phone, with Wilson offering encouragement over a move.

The Englishman is reportedly keen on a switch to north London and is of the belief he would get game time as Kane’s back-up.

Indeed, Spurs face a potentially packed start to the new season. Their sixth-placed Premier League finish and Arsenal’s FA Cup triumph means they have to go through three qualifying ties to reach the Europa League group stages.

Spurs’ presence in Europe, meanwhile, means they enter the Carabao Cup in the third round. However, the EFL want the first four rounds finished by the end of September.

As such, Tottenham could face a high number of games in a matter of weeks during September. Wilson, therefore, could earn significant game time if he moved.

WILSON KEEN FOR TOP-FLIGHT RETURN

Additionally, Wilson is reportedly keen to make an immediate return to the Premier League after the Cherries dropped back down a division.

Wilson would not be the first Cherries star to seal another Premier League move. Nathan Ake recently switched from the south coast club to Manchester City for £41million.

What’s more, he may not be the last. Further reports claim Manchester United are considering a move for winger David Brooks.

The Wales international struggled for game time this season due to consistent ankle troubles.
