Formed back in 1885 and originally known as Millwall Rovers, Millwall FC is a Southeast London-based team nicknamed The Lions - as such it is not surprising that they play their home games at The Den. The current home ground, also known as The New Den, replaced The Old Den in 1993 after they had occupied the old venue for the previous 83 years. Now playing their football in The Championship under manager Gary Rowett, the club has tasted limited success over the course of its long and illustrious history. A highest ever league finish of 10th in the top flight in 1988/89 and beaten finalists in the 2004 FA Cup are their greatest achievements.
Sadly, for many people Millwall are more associated with their prowess off the field than on it given the reputation of their fans as some of the worst football hooligans during the rough and violent times of the 1970's and 80s. Their association with violence and thuggery dates back more than 100 years when the club's fans, who were mainly dock workers, used to brawl freely inside the stadium with their rivals.
Despite the somewhat unsavoury reputation of their fans there have been a number of great players who have donned the famous blue and white kit over the years. Some of the most legendary players include legendary England striker Teddy Sheringham, American goalkeeper Kasey Keller, Australian defender Lucas Neill, Neil Harris (who went on to successfully managed the club as well) and Welsh striker Steve Morison.
