Man Utd have strike pair high on wanted list for January
Mario Mandzukic and Callum Wilson are on Manchester United’s list of striker targets, according to Sky Sports News.
United are understood to have held an interest in 33-year-old Croatia striker Mandzukic in the summer, but a deal never materialised even though United saw Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez leave.
Sky in Italy claim Juventus striker Mandzukic “will be available again when the window re-opens” after turning down moves to United, Paris Saint-Germain and a club in Qatar in the summer.
The forward has not been included in Juventus’ Champions League squad and has not played in Serie A under new boss Maurizio Sarri, but he is high on their wanted list.
Another option for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is Bournemouth and England attacker Wilson, 27, who would fit into line with United’s policy of recruiting English talent.
Wilson has scored five goals in seven Premier League games this season and has once again been picked in Gareth Southgate’s England squad, but with over three years on his contract he would not come cheap.
However, Solskjaer’s need is great with United’s 4-0 win over Chelsea on the opening day the only game in which they have scored more than once since April.
They drew another blank last night against AZ Alkmaar and failed to get a shot on target and Solskjaer’s reliance on Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood has backfired.
Solskjaer recently admitted a striker was now a priority for January.
Solskjaer said: “You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know it’s a forward we’re going to try to recruit next time. We’re looking for some creativity and goals, but they [potential signings] have to be the right one.
“There were strikers available [in the summer] but not the ones we wanted. We couldn’t get the one we wanted.”
