Man Utd contract rebel alerts Jose Mourinho for ambitious Roma reunion to deprive Ten Hag
David de Gea is being linked with a surprise move from Man Utd to Roma on a free transfer at the end of the season, according to the latest news about his future.
De Gea is facing an uncertain future at Man Utd after rejecting their opening offer of a new contract. As things stand, he is due to become a free agent in the summer. In order to extend his stay with the club, the goalkeeper will have to find a compromise over his salary.
Man Utd want De Gea to reduce his wages before agreeing to stay at the club. For his part, the 32-year-old is happy at Old Trafford, but is yet to meet the club in the middle.
In the meantime, there have been several suggestions about what his future might hold. Friday’s Transfer Gossip even put him in the frame for a shock switch to Tottenham Hotspur.
A move abroad could also be a possibility, with reports in his native Spain now suggesting that De Gea could be targeted by Roma.
By making such a move, De Gea would reunite with former Man Utd boss Jose Mourinho, who gave him 113 of his 529 appearances for the club to date.
Mourinho is currently considering who will be his number one for Roma next season. Rui Patricio has featured heavily since joining the Serie A side from Wolves in the same summer as his compatriot coach.
However, there have been some question marks about his performance levels in recent months. Therefore, Mourinho might be ready to find a new first choice in goal.
He already knows all about De Gea, which makes a reunion a possibility. Although he is only a few years younger than Patricio, he should still have several seasons left in the tank.
De Gea to Roma seems an unlikely Man Utd exit route
The only problem behind this theory is that Roma might struggle to meet De Gea’s wage demands. If Man Utd haven’t been able to offer him enough yet, it is unlikely that Roma could usurp them.
But if there was a way for the transfer to materialise, De Gea might reunite with ex-Man Utd defender Chris Smalling and midfielder Nemanja Matic.
Coincidentally, across his career, De Gea has shared more minutes on the pitch with Smalling than any other player.
Alternatively, the report from the Spanish source has suggested that Juventus or Paris Saint-Germain could make offers for De Gea.
Juventus are looking for a successor to ex-Arsenal man Wojciech Szczesny. Meanwhile, PSG’s current number one is Gianluigi Donnarumma, who might one day become a target for other clubs back in his native Italy, coincidentally.
As for De Gea, a new challenge could be on the horizon after his spells in La Liga and the Premier League. But it seems highly unlikely that a move to Roma would be financially feasible.
Indeed, other sources have indicated there is still a confidence that he will renew his contract with Man Utd. It would seem to be a likelier outcome, though nothing is guaranteed yet.
