Eddie Howe praises versatile Newcastle hero idolised by fans amid blossoming ‘journey’
Eddie Howe sung the praises of Newcastle United ace Joelinton following his brace against Norwich City at the weekend, amid his ‘journey’ at the club.
A lot was expected of Joelinton on Tyneside following his record £40million move from Hoffenheim in 2019. The Brazilian had a tough time adapting to the Premier League initially.
Indeed, there were 27 games between his first league goal for the Magpies and his second. That first season, Joelinton managed just two Premier League goals.
His output has slowly increased, as last term he hit four goals in the league. This term, in differing roles, he has also scored four times, but has had a much greater impact.
The Brazilian has been one of the most improved players in the Magpies’ side this season. Howe is clearly impressed at how far Joelinton has come during his tenure at the club, as he mentioned following Newcastle’s 3-0 win over Norwich at the weekend.
“I’m really pleased for Joe, 100th appearance, and you saw the scenes at the end there,” he said via The Daily Mail.
“It’s a brilliant moment for him, especially knowing the journey that he’s had at the club.”
Indeed, Joelinton’s brace at the weekend was the first of his Premier League career. He played as a no.9 during that game, as he has for much of his Newcastle career, but has been utilised in a midfield role this season, too.
“I think Joe can play anywhere in those front positions and obviously as an attacking midfielder as well,” Howe added.
“It’s great to have players like that.”
Joelinton and Guimaraes praised by Howe
Howe also lumped Joelinton in with another crucial Brazilian in the Newcastle side – Bruno Guimaraes.
“They’re a joy to work with,” Howe said. “They have that inner strength, they’re great people and have become integral to the squad. Long may that continue.”
Guimaraes’ impact has been evident since his £38million move from Lyon in January. He has scored four goals – including one in the game against Norwich – and provided one assist in his 13 appearances to this point.
The injection of quality he has brought to the side has been a massive help in the Magpies climbing the table. They sit ninth, a far cry from 19th, where they were when Howe took charge.
