Tottenham star tipped for surprise Brighton move after Nuno snubs

Joe Rodon in action for Tottenham

Tottenham defender Joe Rodon could join Brighton on loan in January as he continues to struggle for game time in north London, according to reports.

The Wales international has only made three appearances for Spurs this season. He has started both their Europa Conference League games, as well coming on in one Premier League outing. He was completely left out of the squad for the weekend win at Newcastle.

The highly-touted 23-year-old moved to north London from Swansea in October 2020. But despite making a solid impression under Jose Mourinho in his early appearances for the club, Rodon has struggled for game time since.

And now Football Insider claims that a potential switch to the south coast could happen in January.

“What does the future hold for Rodon now?” Spurs insider JohnWenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“The January transfer window is coming up and Rodon is a player who just can’t get a look in.

“That’s also under several managers so he will be assessing his options ahead of the window opening.

“I think he’s been unlucky with Tottenham now favouring Tanganga as the sort of back-up defender.

Fiorentina name their price for Dusan Vlahovic

Fiorentina have reportedly set a £59m price tag on forward Dusan Vlahovic, with more news on Phil Foden and Mohamed Salah.

“He can play in two positions and counts as home-grown so he has that edge.

“There are natural advantages there. It’s frustrating that Welsh players don’t count as home-grown in Europe.

“Rodon will be asking himself if he should be playing week in, week out in the Premier League, the answer is probably ‘yes’.

“He may look at a loan deal, there were reports over the summer that Brighton were interested in him so that’s an option.”

Dier labelled not good enough for Tottenham

Meanwhile, Eric Dier has been labelled ‘nowhere near‘ good enough to play for Tottenham after his comical own goal against Newcastle on Sunday.

The 27-year-old managed to put the ball into his own net with just a minute left on the clock. That made the scoreline 3-2 in Spurs’ favour and they saw out the match to claim all three points. But it meant the final few moments at St James’ Park were more tense than they should have been.

Goals by Tanguy Ndombele, Harry Kane and Son Heung-min made the half-time score 3-1 following Callum Wilson’s second-minute opener. It appeared as though that would also be the final score until Dier chested the ball past Hugo Lloris from a set-piece.

Former Leeds United and Middlesbrough striker Noel Whelan was far from impressed. And he thinks it is symptomatic of bigger problems with the former Sporting ace.

“That own goal was one of the worst ever and the problem with Eric Dier is he makes these mistakes too often,” he told Football Insider. “For an experienced England international, you have to question whether he is good enough for Tottenham. At times, he looks nowhere near.

“He’s a good competitor and no-one can question his commitment to Tottenham. But, you look at his performances and he is hardly a reliable centre-back at the top level.”
