Edinson Cavani future: Three La Liga clubs join race as Man Utd contract approaches end
Edinson Cavani could be set for a move to Spain with three La Liga clubs interested in his signature, according to reports.
Cavani’s time at Old Trafford will end once his contract is up at the end of June. The striker made 59 appearances across all competitions for Manchester United, scoring 19 and assisting seven more. Now, the Uruguayan could be set for a new challenge in Spain.
That’s according to Fichajes, who claim that Real Sociedad, Real Betis and Villarreal are all interested in recruiting Cavani.
The 35-year-old has enjoyed a successful career so far, claiming a number of achievements in France and Italy with PSG and Napoli.
However, the forward is yet to experience football in La Liga. A move here would make sense, as Cavani is believed to be actively looking for a move away from England.
However, there is other competition across Europe eager for Cavani’s experienced goal threat next season.
Cavani has also been linked with a return to Serie A, with the potential suitor quite surprising.
Salernitana are reportedly also keen in recruiting the former Napoli star, if they can afford his wage demands.
It would be no surprise to see Cavani take a step down in terms of squad ability. He has suffered a disappointing final campaign at United, with just three goal contributions from 20 appearances.
A move to Spain may help revitalize this aspect of his game. Real Sociedad, who finished sixth and qualified for Europa League, are in desperate need of a new frontline.
They managed just 40 league goals from 38 games – however, managed a top six finish with a strong defensive record.
Real Betis also secured Europa League action, whereas Villarreal finished seventh and must settle for the Europa Conference League.
Man Utd must prepare for life without Edinson Cavani
While Cavani did suffer in front of goal this season, he cannot be completely at blame for this.
The Red Devils struggled all season to find the back of the net, and lacked consistency in their attacking line.
Without the option of Cavani next season, United must prioritise at least one new forward this summer.
The club have already been heavily linked with a move for youngster Darwin Nunez. However, the club may also need to look for someone who matches Cavani’s experience.
Only two players managed to break double digits in goals scored for the club last season – Cristiano Ronaldo (24) and Bruno Fernandes (10).
