Cornet strike not enough as Wilson double sees Burnley relegated after Newcastle defeat

Callum Wilson Newcastle 2022 TEAMtalk1

Burnley will play Championship football next season after a disappointing 2-1 home loss to Newcastle on the final day of the campaign.

Callum Wilson gave the Tynesiders a half-time lead from the spot and added another on 60 minutes. Maxwell Cornet pulled one back late in the second period but the defeat, coupled with Leeds win at Brentford, confirmed relegation. Burnley boss Mike Jackson named an unchanged side from the one that drew 1-1 with Aston Villa on Thursday.

Newcastle chief Eddie Howe opted to change two from the 2-0 win over Arsenal on Monday. Kieran Trippier and Jamaal Lascelles replaced Emil Krafth and Fabian Schar.

Striker Chris Wood was on the bench after recovering from a hip injury. There was little to speak about in a cagey opening by both sides.

But Magpies forward Joelinton was stretchered off on 10 minutes with an ankle injury. Jacob Murphy replaced the Brazilian. Neither side had a shot on goal in the first 15 minutes but Bruno Guimaraes tested Nick Pope in the 17th minute.

There were then Newcastle claims for a penalty as Nathan Collins seemed to handle for a corner. It was initially turned down but a glance at the monitor saw referee Craig Pawson point to the spot.

Wilson made no mistake to give Howe’s side a one-goal advantage.

Despite the situation, the Clarets struggled to get anything going in the first half an hour. They continued to push but lacked quality in the final third.

Dwight McNeil managed to engineer a shooting chance as the half wore on but his 25-yard effort flew into the stands.

Deep in stoppage time, Allan Saint-Maximin outstripped the defence before seeing his shot saved well by Pope.

A lacklustre first 45 minutes by Burnley saw them 1-0 down and heading for the Championship, with Leeds drawing at Brentford.

Jackson made a significant change at half-time to try and liven things up as Wout Weghorst replaced Roberts. But the Clarets could easily have been 2-0 down as Collins had Pope to thank for preventing what would have been a dramatic own goal.

Wilson doubles up

Just before the hour mark, Miguel Almiron fired over the bar when squaring the ball seemed the logical choice. But just a few seconds later, the Magpies were 2-0 to the good thanks to Wilson once again.

Excellent work from Saint-Maximin saw the ball arrive for an unmarked Wilson who made no mistake from eight yards out.

With Leeds winning at Brentford, the Clarets fans sensed that the game may be up. But they were back in the game on 69 minutes as Cornet halved the deficit.

His initial shot was well saved by Martin Dubravka but the African hammered home the rebound. And Weghorst almost turned Ashley Barnes’ cross into the net just moments later but saw his effort fly the wrong side of the post.

Matt Target then cleared off the line from Jack Cork’s curling shot as Burnley piled on the pressure looking for an equaliser.

Newcastle were pinned in their own half as the game drew to its conclusion but their defence held firm.

Leeds victory over Brentford confirmed that Burnley were down, with just one point taken from their last four games.
