Antonio Conte ‘unsure’ over Joe Rodon transfer decision, as Prem suitor for Tottenham misfit named
Antonio Conte is “a bit unsure” what Tottenham Hotspur should do with Joe Rodon during the summer transfer window, according to one journalist.
Rodon has now completed two seasons with Tottenham, but has been used sparingly in each. He played 14 times in 2020-21 and just 10 times in 2021-22, including a paltry three Premier League appearances.
Three years remain on the Wales international’s contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. However, his future could be in doubt amid competition for places at the back.
Conte has already favoured Cristian Romero, Eric Dier and Ben Davies to Rodon, who failed to start a single league match last term. Indeed, even fringe players like Davinson Sanchez and Japhet Tanganga got more gametime.
Subsequently, reports a few months ago suggested that Rodon is ready to leave Tottenham. But he remains part of their squad for the time being.
According to Daily Mail journalist Sami Mokbel, Conte still has doubts over whether Tottenham should offload Rodon, despite the 24-year-old’s lack of gametime.
Mokbel told the Last Word On Spurs podcast: “I think there is domestic interest in Rodon for sure. I think [Nottingham] Forest have looked at him.
“From what I hear, I think Conte’s a bit unsure about whether it’s the right thing to let Rodon go.
“I think he looks at Rodon and he can see a player there. But it’s just is he good enough? Has he got the time to shape him during a season where they’re going to be contesting for a top-four position, playing in the Champions League and trying to finally win a trophy?”
Tottenham exit would benefit Joe Rodon
Especially ahead of the World Cup in November, it may be better for Rodon to leave Tottenham.
Joining a club like Nottingham Forest, who are building an enticing project, could be something to consider.
Ultimately, though, it is up to Tottenham whether to accept any offers that come their way. And it seems their stance is still to be determined.
If they sign Clement Lenglet as expected, though, there would be even less need for Rodon, so perhaps they could think more seriously about offloading him.
